Hawaii’s beautiful beaches, tropical climate, unique culture and rich history all combine to make Hawaii one of the most unique states in the US. These factors, without question, combine to make the Tourism industry the number one industry for the entire state. Tourism comprises nearly a quarter of the state’s GDP and employs an incredibly large percentage of the available workforce.

If you happen to be looking for a job in Hawaii, you’re in luck! Historically, Hawaii has boasted an unemployment rate that is much lower than the national average. While Hawaii’s job segments aren’t necessarily diverse, the actual jobs within those segments are.

Hawaii’s geographic location makes shipping goods to market expensive, and less viable than similar industries in the mainland United States. Because shipping can be cost-prohibitive, textiles and other non-agricultural exports generally have few available jobs. Despite the high costs of shipping, Hawaii is known for their production of coffee, macadamia nuts, sugar and pineapple. Employment in these agricultural areas can frequently be found.

Aside from Tourism and Agriculture, a growing percentage of the available workforce is being employed in the industries of Government and Professional & Business Services. There's also jobs in .

Instead of looking for a position with the same title as your last (or possibly current) position in , try to find a job based on the duties you performed, without regard to the job title or industry. This can often yield additional search results for and will provide you with a greater chance of getting hired!

If you’re looking for jobs in Hawaii, remember to consider how your job skills may apply to a wide range of industries outside of the one you’re currently in. Remember that the job title you’ve had in the past may not be the same job title in all industries. In order to find jobs across different industries that are a good fit for your current set of job skills, it’s best to perform a skills-based search rather than a search based on your current or past job title. It’s likely that this will also return additional results in your current industry that you might not have previously considered.

With more results in your job search comes more opportunity. Those opportunities are what will eventually turn into your new dream job!

If you are looking for work in Hawaii, stay positive and keep searching. As my Hawaiian friend told me when I was searching for work myself, pomaika'i!
