Part Time vs Full Time

If you’re trying to decide between full time and part time employment, weighing the pros and cons of each might be helpful.

Full Time Employment

Pros:

• Generally provides health insurance and often includes dental, vision and/or life insurance
• Usually provide some form of retirement investment plan (i.e. 401K)
• Steady hours
• Set schedule
• Usually the only person working in that position

Cons:

• Could become bored with job duties over time
• Could wind up working long hours and throw off the work/life balance
• Could become dependent on one single source of income. In case of job loss, this could create a large problem

Part Time Employment

Pros:

• More economical to the company and likely to be more part time jobs available
• Not entirely dependent on one single source of income so in the event of job loss, there will be less disruption
• Can often accept two, and sometimes more, positions to increase income level
• Can be worked alongside a full time job

Cons:

• No health benefits
• Usually less job security than with a full time job
